Retatrutide in the UK: Unlicensed Status, MHRA Action and the Road to Approval
LynxLab · 24 October 2026 · 9 min read
Where retatrutide stands with the MHRA and NICE as of October 2026, what the regulator has seized and said, what a UK licence needs, and when one could come.
Retatrutide has no marketing authorisation in the United Kingdom or anywhere else. As of 24 October 2026 it is an investigational medicine: five phase 3 trials have reported, Eli Lilly has said it will file with the US FDA in early 2027, and the MHRA has twice in twelve months raided premises making or storing products labelled as retatrutide.
That combination, strong trial data and no licence, is why the search term "retatrutide uk" has grown so quickly and why so much of what is sold under the name is fake. This post sets out the regulatory position plainly: what the MHRA has said, what NICE has started, what a UK licence would require, and what a realistic timetable looks like. The product page for retatrutide covers the molecule itself.
Retatrutide is unlicensed everywhere, including the UK
A medicine can only be sold for human use in the UK once the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) grants a marketing authorisation. Retatrutide does not have one. The MHRA's statement of 15 October 2026 put it in one line: "Retatrutide has not been authorised for use in the UK" (MHRA, October 2026).
The position is the same in the United States and the European Union. Lilly said on 23 July 2026 that it had the clinical data package to support global submissions, and that it planned to submit a Biologics License Application to the FDA in the first quarter of 2027 (Lilly, July 2026). A submission is not an approval, and Lilly has not announced a UK filing date.
The trial results behind that filing are set out in the retatrutide trial results from phase 2 to TRIUMPH. The short version is that the 12mg dose produced 25.0% average weight loss over 80 weeks on the intention-to-treat analysis in TRIUMPH-1, a figure no licensed drug has matched.
What the MHRA has said and seized
The MHRA's Criminal Enforcement Unit has run a series of operations against unlicensed weight-loss products, and retatrutide has featured in each one.
- 24 October 2025: a two-day raid on a warehouse in Northampton, described by the MHRA as the first illicit weight-loss medicine production facility found in the UK. Officers seized more than 2,000 unlicensed retatrutide and tirzepatide pens awaiting dispatch, tens of thousands of empty pens and raw chemical ingredients (MHRA, October 2025).
- 28 May 2026: a raid on a country estate near Northampton recovered around 12,000 doses of unlicensed weight-loss medicines, including retatrutide, and two men aged 29 were arrested under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
- 14 October 2026: with West Midlands Police, officers seized over 12,000 fake retatrutide and tirzepatide pens and packaging for around 30,000 more from an industrial unit in Birmingham, valued at about £2 million.
The regulator's wording has hardened over the year. In October 2025 it said that products claiming to contain retatrutide "are likely to be illegal". By October 2026 Tim Duffield, head of intelligence at the enforcement unit, said that products sold as retatrutide outside legitimate clinical trials "are being supplied illegally and could pose serious risks to public health".
The MHRA's statements are enforcement notices rather than safety alerts, and they apply to anyone trying to buy retatrutide as a medicine for personal use in the UK.
NICE has started work before any licence exists
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence does not license medicines; it decides whether the NHS in England should fund them. It can start that work before the MHRA has decided anything, and for retatrutide it has.
NICE selected "Retatrutide for managing overweight and obesity" as a technology appraisal topic on 15 September 2025 under reference GID-TA11845. On 5 October 2026 the status moved to "In progress. Scoping commenced", and the suggested remit is to appraise retatrutide "within its marketing authorisation" alongside diet and physical activity (NICE, 2026).
Scoping is the first of several stages. It does not signal that a licence is imminent, only that NICE wants to be ready. The same aligned approach was used for tirzepatide, where NICE guidance followed the MHRA licence by about thirteen months.
Lilly's UK paediatric plan is the only filing on record
The one retatrutide document the MHRA has published is a paediatric investigation plan, reference MHRA-102112-PIP01-25. Eli Lilly and Company Ltd of Basingstoke applied for it, the MHRA agreed it on 3 June 2026, and the decision was published on 16 July 2026 (MHRA, 2026).
A paediatric investigation plan is a requirement for any new medicine that may later be used in children. It commits the company to two trials, one in adolescents aged 12 to under 18 and one in children aged 6 to under 12, with a completion date of 1 November 2035. Children under six were waived.
The plan does not mean an adult licence application has been filed. It shows that Lilly's UK subsidiary is doing the groundwork that precedes one; the brand name was listed as "not yet available" in July 2026. Laboratories ordering retatrutide 30mg vials should not read anything more into it than that.
What a UK marketing authorisation would take
Lilly has two routes to a UK licence. The first is a national application to the MHRA. For innovative medicines, which include new active substances and all biological products, the MHRA aims for a positive decision within 150 clock-on days if all questions are resolved after one round, and within 210 days otherwise (MHRA, 2026). Clock stops while the company answers questions are not counted, so real time is longer.
The second is the International Recognition Procedure, introduced on 1 January 2024, which lets the MHRA rely on an approval already granted by a trusted regulator such as the FDA. Recognition A runs to 60 days and Recognition B to 110 days. A first-in-class new active substance automatically falls into Route B, so retatrutide would get the 110-day timetable at best, and only after the FDA or another reference regulator had approved it first.
Either way the company must file first, and the dossier has to include manufacturing and quality data as well as the trial results. Lilly's July 2026 statement gave the first quarter of 2027 for the FDA filing and said nothing about a UK date; a UK dossier would need the same material.
How tirzepatide's UK timeline ran
Tirzepatide is the nearest precedent. Its obesity trial, SURMOUNT-1, was published in June 2022. The MHRA authorised Mounjaro for weight management on 8 November 2023, via the national route, and said it had prioritised rapid assessment "given the public health importance of access to new medicines to help tackle obesity" (MHRA, 2023).
NICE guidance TA1026 recommending tirzepatide on the NHS in England followed on 23 December 2024, with a phased rollout written into the funding terms. From trial publication to NHS prescribing took roughly two and a half years, and tirzepatide already had a UK diabetes licence when the obesity application went in.
How the two drugs compare on the trial data is covered in retatrutide vs tirzepatide vs semaglutide. For UK regulatory purposes the relevant difference is that retatrutide's glucagon component is new to the MHRA.
When retatrutide could realistically be licensed in the UK
No regulator has published a date. The pieces that can be dated are these: Lilly files with the FDA in the first quarter of 2027; the BBC reported that an FDA review can take up to a year; a UK recognition application could follow an FDA approval, or a national application could run in parallel.
The BBC's reporting on 5 September 2026 concluded that retatrutide "would not be legally available in the US until the end of 2027 at the earliest" and that in the UK, "depending on the approval of the MHRA, it could be on the market by 2028" (BBC News, 2026). That is the optimistic end of the range.
The same report carried a caution worth repeating: only around half of drugs that reach phase 3 in the US are eventually approved. Retatrutide's five positive trials make it a stronger candidate than most, but dysesthesia, heart rate and the unproven cardiovascular outcome are all questions a regulator will ask. NHS funding through NICE would be a further step after any licence, and NICE's own page gives no date.
What "research use" means next to the regulator's position
Peptide suppliers in the UK sell retatrutide vials as a research chemical, freeze-dried and labelled not for human consumption. That is a different product category from the pre-filled pens the MHRA has been seizing, which were made and sold as medicines. It is not an exemption from the regulator's view: the MHRA's October 2025 note said that outside authorised clinical trials, "any products being sold in the UK that claim to contain retatrutide are likely to be illegal".
The Guardian reported on 30 November 2025 that a company trading as Retatrutide UK was selling a 20mg pen for £132 while holding a 4.4 Trustpilot score, and described the product as "unlicensed and illegal to sell or buy". Lilly's own position is that "no one should take anything claiming to be retatrutide outside of a Lilly-sponsored clinical trial" (BBC News, 2026).
For laboratory buyers the practical issue is verification. With no licensed reference product, a batch-specific certificate of analysis showing HPLC purity and mass spectrometry identity is the only evidence that a vial of research-grade retatrutide contains the stated peptide.
LynxLab stocks retatrutide for research use in 10mg (£59.99), 20mg (£99.99) and 30mg (£134.99) vials, tested to 99% purity, with the lab report for each batch on the retatrutide uk product page.
Frequently asked questions
Is retatrutide approved in the UK?
No. The MHRA stated on 15 October 2026 that retatrutide has not been authorised for use in the UK. No marketing authorisation application has been made public, and Lilly's first planned regulatory filing is to the US FDA in the first quarter of 2027.
When will retatrutide be available in the UK?
No regulator has given a date. The BBC's September 2026 estimate was the end of 2027 for the United States at the earliest and possibly 2028 for the UK, depending on the MHRA. NICE began scoping its appraisal on 5 October 2026 but lists the publication date as "TBC".
Has retatrutide been submitted to the MHRA?
Not publicly. The only MHRA document on record is a paediatric investigation plan agreed on 3 June 2026 and published on 16 July 2026, which concerns future trials in children rather than an adult licence. The MHRA does not publish pending applications, so an unannounced filing cannot be ruled out.
Is it legal to buy retatrutide in the UK?
The MHRA's position is that products sold as retatrutide for human use outside legitimate clinical trials are being supplied illegally. Research chemical suppliers sell it labelled not for human consumption, which is a different product category, but the regulator has not endorsed any retatrutide product. Anyone considering a licensed weight-loss medicine is directed by the MHRA to a registered pharmacy and a prescription.
